A "Little" Fall Trip Part 5 (September 26-October 2, 2018)

Wednesday, September 26

Cheyenne, Wyoming to Raton, New Mexico

We got a relatively early (for us) start from Cheyenne this morning and followed I-25 south to the Colorado state line

And then down to Denver, taking the by-pass toll road around by the airport and down to Castle Rock, where we stopped to refuel and get a drink from the ice chest, only to find that the ice chest wasn't where it was supposed to be; we had left it in the room in Cheyenne.

Our trip continued down I-25 to southern Colorado Springs (traffic was even worse than I remembered from the last time we drove through there, and I didn't recognize much from when I lived in Colorado Springs...of course, that was from 1986-1989, so I guess I shouldn't expect to see much that I used to know.

The highlight of this day was meeting Barbara's former, 1983 Wheelock student (Lubbock, TX) in Colorado Springs. Chad Miller treated us to a meal at Chili's where we were able to meet most of his family. Amazingly, when Barbara and I visit with former students, the years seem to fade away and conversations flow.  It was fun to watch Barbara and Chad as they talked about school days at Wheelock and the students they both knew.

After lunch, we took some photos and then climbed aboard Taz for the next leg of the trip which took us through Pueblo and down to Walsenburg and Trinidad, where we had a short break at the I-25 Rest Area and got a view of the iconic El Moro Peak.

From there, we continued over Raton Pass, crossed over into New Mexico, and made a short trip to Raton, where we stopped and spent the night.  We had originally thought of staying in Trinidad and getting out very early tomorrow morning, but after negotiating all the road construction and closed lanes through Raton Pass, we were very glad we decided to tough it out and make the extra miles today.

Thursday, September 27

Raton to Roswell, New Mexico

The ride from Raton to Roswell New Mexico, is filled with miles and miles of nothing but miles and miles of wide open country.

We stopped in Las Vegas for fuel and got a couple of Subway sandwiches for a lunch down the road.  After about 45 minutes, we found a safe and scenic cutout where we could safely park Taz and enjoy our meal while we communed with nature.

When we got to I-40, we took a new road (for us) N.M. Highway 119, the Mesa Lands Scenic Byway, a "shortcut" to get us to Vaughn.  Unfortunately, we rode right into a major windstorm and were battered all the way to Vaughn.  Because of the conditions, Barbara wasn't able to get shots of some really beautiful scenery...we'll just have to try that road another time.

After a fuel stop in Vaughn (the winds weren't helping our fuel mileage any today) we rode the final 100 miles to Roswell, checked in at the hotel, and prepared for an evening of visiting with Barbara's sister Carol...fun and games and lots of talk!!!

Roswell to Artesia

After Carol left for work, we packed the trailer and headed out in search of a car wash for Taz.  It has been a long, dusty, muddy trip, and Taz deserved to look her best for our trip to hometown Artesia.

When Taz was shined up like new, we climbed back on and drove out West Second Street to Champion Motor Sports, Roswell's foremost store and shop for all things motorcycle.  I didn't find what I wanted in the parts department, but when I came back, I found Barbara visiting with one of the local aliens.  We didn't know they frequented motorcycle shops, but it IS Roswell, after all...

With our business in Roswell completed, it was time to ride south to Artesia for a Terpening Family fix.  Everyone was at work when we got to Artesia, so we rode to one of our favorite restaurants, Chaos, to get some lunch.

After eating, we rode back out to Jerry and Nancy's place to unpack and settle in for a few days.  When we got to the front door, we saw what we thought was a really unique owl statue...until it turned its head and blinked at us.  Jerry told us later that it had evidently taken up temporary residence.

When Jerry and Nancy got home from work, we enjoyed a great meal and a full evening of family fun and fellowship...just like the old days when we began our retirement by living on their property in Big V.

++++++++
Saturday, September 29

After lounging around a little this morning, we rode with Jerry and Nancy, and met Becky at Chaos for our Saturday morning breakfast.  The servings were Texas-sized and everything was delicious, so none of us walked out hungry.

One of Carol's grandchildren was having a birthday celebration at Faith Baptist church this afternoon, so we rode Taz to town and joined Carol and her family for some cake and ice cream before giving everyone rides on Taz.  Except for Carol's turn, the rides were short, slow, and easy.  However, if you ask Carol, she'll probably tell you I was driving at least 100 miles per hour while doing figure 8's.  The main thing is that a good time was had by all (except maybe by Carol).

This evening was more family fun with games, laughter, and lots of family stories.

++++++++

Sunday, September 30

Jerry, Nancy, and Becky are very involved in activities at First Methodist Church, so we let them get ready and on their way before we were to leave around 10:00 for the 10:30 service.  We were dressed and ready to go when we discovered we couldn't find the key for Taz.  I knew I had had it in my hot little hand (at least I THOUGHT I had it), but we tore our room, the suitcases, the trailer, and everything we could find apart looking for the key.  It's a specialized key, and the only other one we have was back in Mineola (we'll rethink that next time we take a trip).

After letting Jerry and Nancy know by text what was going on, we searched some more and around 11:15 I found it.  I did have it in my hand earlier, but when I took some things out to the trailer, it slipped out of my hand and landed under the garage door opener.  Praise the Lord, the lost was found!!!

We made it to First Methodist just in time for the meet and greet session following the service.  To celebrate we went to a new (for us) Mexican restaurant for their Sunday buffet.  Good friends and good eats...we are truly blessed!!!

Tonight we did some visiting, but most of the evening was about packing everything and loading it into the trailer and the saddlebags so we could get an early start tomorrow morning.  These days were great fun, but it was time for Jerry and Nancy to get their house back, and for us to start toward ours.

++++++++

Monday, October 1

We were up and out of the house around 5:45 this morning.  It was pitch black out, but we broke our "dark riding" rule with the hopes of possibly getting all the way to Mineola by evening.

Our ride took us to Carlsbad and then toward Hobbs, where we would pick up our normal route home.  But, we had heard of a shortcut through the oilfields that would save us some time getting to Big Spring and I-20.

Well, the shortcut didn't save time.  It turns out that the heavy oilfield truck traffic has wrecked miles upon miles of our chosen road.  And, we had to wait nearly 45 minutes before we could get our turn on a one-way stretch of highway.

We finally got to Big Springs a little after noon, fueled up, and then went in search of a good local restaurant.  We found one that looked as if it might double as a tire and transmission shop when the kitchen was closed, but man-oh-man, was the food delicious...far better than any chain brand in town!!!

By the time we had made the stretch of I-20 from Big Spring to Abilene, we gave up on trying to make it home today.  Barbara located a hotel and we checked in while on the road, then she texted our "adopted" niece and nephew, Zeke and Amanda, to ask them to have supper with us at Firehouse Sub; but they invited us to their house for some awesome leftover ribs. It's always a joy to visit with them!

++++++++

Tuesday, October 2

We didn't get away from Abilene as early as we did from Artesia yesterday, but we were on I-20 shortly after sun-up and on the last leg of our Fall Taz Trip.  Fortunately, it was mostly uneventful, the winds didn't get up as bad as they sometimes do, and traffic was relatively kind to motorcyclists.

We did decide to pamper ourselves with breakfast at The Smokestack, an iconic West Texas restaurant between Abilene and Weatherford.  The food was plentiful and delicious, and we had an ongoing conversation with a couple of deputies from another county who were in the area serving warrants.  We had been so blessed by so many during the trip that we paid our good fortune early by paying the cashier our check and their check before slipping out to begin the last stretch (except for a short fuel stop) toward home.

And then...Here we were, Back home in Mineola, Texas, after 19 days, 9 states, 3,529.5 miles, two tired butts, and countless memories.  Thank you, God, for your many blessings!!!

A "Little" Fall Trip Part 4 (September 24-25)

Monday, September 24

Sheridan, Wyoming to Little Big Horn, Montana

We left Sheridan this morning for a day trip to Little Bighorn Custer Battlefield in Montana. A very sobering history lesson and sight.

++++++++

Tuesday, September 25

Sheridan to Cheyenne, Wyoming

We were up and at it early this morning as we are trying to beat the cold weather front that was headed our way...Thanks to Eve who sent this to give us the extra incentive we needed!

Our previously planned trip from Billings, Montana, to Fargo, North Dakota, went on the to-do list for a future trip as we headed south.

++++++++

Our time in South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana left us with a feeling of sadness and bewilderment about the series of events that destroyed so-called "savage" cultures that had called the West their home for so many years before "civilization" took over.  The following quotes are sad, but true and enlightening...

A "Little" Fall Trip Part 3 (Afternoon & Evening of September 23)

Sunday, September 23 (afternoon and evening)

This was an "immensely" long day! It really wasn't scheduled to be that way; but....

After leaving Custer, we chose a church in Newcastle, Wyoming, strictly by it's start time which was 10:30. Our idea was that we'd go to church, be at Devils Tower by 2ish and in Sheridan no later than 5. Well...wrong!!! The church service lasted til 12:15; we still needed gas for Taz, and lunch for Jim and me. We quickly found a gas station near the church and I went inside to see if I could be spontaneous and creative in find something for us to nibble on while riding on Taz.

Now, you must use your imagination on this next part. I bought 2 corn dogs...one for each of us. But...then when I got on Taz, I realized that there was no way I could hold his and mine and us eat. Just wasn't going to happen since the wind also decided to start up! So...I put one corn dog in my pocket...LOL and held the other one and tried to find Jim's mouth (remember I am behind him!) Makes me chuckle just trying to describe this to you! Anyway...we did live through that and did finally made it to Devils Tower around 4:15 with still another 3 hours to go to get to our Sheridan hotel!

What an adventure!

Various Native American nations have their own legends about Devils Tower.  Our favorite is the following from the Kiowa Nation...

Before the Kiowa came south, they were camped on a stream in the far north where there were a great many bears, many of them. One day, seven little girls were playing at a distance from the village and were chased by some bears. The girls ran toward the village and the bears were just about to catch them when the girls jumped on a low rock, about three feet high. One of the girls prayed to the rock, "Rock take pity on us, rock save us!" The rock heard them and began to grow upwards, pushing the girls higher and higher. When the bears jumped to reach the girls, they scratched the rock, broke their claws, and fell on the ground.

The rock rose higher and higher, the bears still jumped at the girls until they were pushed up into the sky, where they now are, seven little stars in a group (The Pleiades). In the winter, in the middle of the night, the seven stars are right over this high rock. When the people came to look, they found the bears' claws, turned to stone, all around the base.

No Kiowa living has ever seen this rock, but the old men have told about it - it is very far north where the Kiowa used to live. It is a single rock with scratched sides, the marks of the bears' claws are there yet, rising straight up, very high. There is no other like it in the whole country, there are no trees on it, only grass on top. The Kiowa call this rock "Tso-aa", a tree rock, possibly because it grew tall like a tree.

Told by I-See-Many-Camp-Fire-Places, Kiowa soldier at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, 1897.

Tuesday, September 20-the morning of Sunday, September 23

Day 6, Thursday, September 20

Yay!!! A late morning! We didn't sleep particularly late; but just to not have to hit the road was a real treat! This motel, The Rocket Inn, was another suggestion from Steve. He can certainly recommend quaint places anytime! Talk about a funky room. It was spotless, cozy, and very, very unique! We had 3 beds and no dresser or closet...so here's how we handled that. The first bed which was a twin is where all of our layer clothes were placed...coats, hats, gloves, sweaters, etc. We slept in the middle one, and the far one (as you can see) was our "dresser." It had our regular clothes, make up, shaving kit, etc.  Jim did hang a couple of his jackets over the heater this particular day.

++++++++

Day 7, Friday, September 21

Started the day off by walking to the laundromat across the street from our motel. Even while travelling, real life wanders in.

Now...Come ride with us on Taz to Mount Rushmore...Part 1

For us, walking onto the Mount Rushmore grounds is a sobering experience. It's as though you're meeting the Presidents for the first time. And, then you take time to soak up the atmosphere by enjoying lunch and an ice cream treat.

We spent so much time at Mount Rushmore that we had to hustle down the mountain back to Custer to get ready for our evening treat. We had found a "dinner" theatre of sorts (if you call having South Dakota hot dogs a dinner. lol) to attend. What fun!

++++++++

Day 8, Saturday, September 22

We made an early, cold start to this day as we had lots of miles we wanted to travel to see the beauty of South Dakota. We thought we should take our readers on this hour and 15 minute trip to Deadwood in just a minute and 38 seconds. So hang on tight and ride with us!

A "Little" Fall Trip Part 1 (September 15-19) ...

September 15- September 19, 2018

Our fall trip journal entries are going to be quite different! Some days we'll use music and video to remember our trip. Others will be a variety of photos, music, and video. Music is some that Jim plays...some we just like...some our friend Gene Neyer plays on his accordion or Donnie Attaway on his banjo. Yeah...it's going to be quite unusual!

++++++++

Day 1 - Saturday, September 15

Just a little side note on Gloria's, a Salvadoran restaurant. If you have an opportunity to eat there, do! It's quite authentic and delicious!

++++++++

Day 2 - Sunday, September 16

One reason we came to Allen on Saturday was to allow time for us to go to church before Abby's musical. It's always quite interesting to see where we wind up. We thought we'd go to 1st Baptist in Frisco; but got there early so decided to see where the musical was going to be held. When we did that, we found Grace Church just right down the road!

++++++++

Day 3 - Monday, September 17

Happy birthday to Grandson, Kaiden!

Just a long day of hot weather and riding to get to Gene & Michelle's! As we traveled along, we worked on ideas for the children's sermon for Chad and Melaina...Found the treats to send to them and then I designed the cards to attach to each package. We also wrote the script idea; but left it to them to tweak it to fit themselves.

++++++++

Day 4 - Tuesday, September 18

Started out early trying to beat the heat. Just what do we do as we travel along the highway once the children's sermon is done. Well, sometimes I pull a really silly stunt like trying to refill my drink mug while we're going down the highway at 75 miles an hour. Yep...that doesn't work too well!   I, also, check Facebook and messenger which is how we found out that Helen Smith has a brother in Stockton, KS, who owns 183 Lanes. Therefore, we decided to make that our lunch stop. Another way to keep us entertained, is to use my iPhone to look up places we pass or places we will come to. That is how I found the Pony Express Station in Gothenburg, NE!

Our choice of motel in North Platte was chosen by recommendation of Steve Whitfield. And, was that a winner! Not only was the Husker Inn clean, quaint, and inexpensive but...we were given homemade brownie squares, chicken noodle casserole, a box of fresh fruits and a huge slab of homemade rhubarb pie! Quite a haul!

++++++++

Day 5 - Wednesday, September 19

Maybe Jim's navigator made a slight tactical error in planning this leg of the trip. It just seemed better to take the long way to Custer, SD, by going to Wall, SD first. Just added 2 hours to the trip. However, I didn't plan on hitting a stretch of the South Dakota border where road construction had left the highway without any asphalt, but with plenty of wet caliche! Plus, the no chance of rain wound up completely wrong as we were in fog and drizzle most of the day. Still a fun, cold, messy time!

++++++++

And that brings us to the end of Part 1 of our Fall Trip. Thanks for riding with us!

A Little Beginning to September

Saturday, September 1 - Friday, September 14

Saturday, September 1

Today was a Grams/Gramps/Kaiden day while Leah and Ryan spent some Mommy/Daddy time away from us.

We started our day with a full breakfast of bacon, eggs, and pancakes...

Followed by some "guy time" trimming trees in the north 40 while Barbara cleaned the kitchen...

When Kaiden and I were finished trimming trees, we came back inside to get cleaned up.  Kaiden entertained himself while Barbara and I got ready for a trip to Sulphur Springs...

And then it was time to head out to the theater in Sulphur Springs to the 3-D version of Mission Impossible...

It would be un-American to go to a movie and not have popcorn...

When we got back home, Kaiden and I fired up the grill to pre-cook hamburger patties and hot dogs for the family Labor Day celebration on Monday.

When we finished with the grill, we moved back inside to prepare our favorite Saturday night meal...stacked enchiladas topped with fried eggs...Yum-Yum!!!

It was a full and very busy day, and it didn't take long after eating to decide we needed some serious sleep to prepare for a busy day tomorrow.

++++++++

Sunday, September 2

This morning found all of us at Yantis FBC.  Kaiden was there for Sunday School, and Leah and Ryan joined us for the morning service.

We had a guest speaker and a special drama presentation this morning, so Barbara and I didn't do a children's sermon.

This afternoon and evening were all about family time.  Barbara, Kaiden, and I played a round of Phase 10 while we waited for Leah and Ryan to get to the house.

This evening we flipped the two-seat sofa to try to find our what the problem with the recliner was...we found a potential problem with the cable housing, tried a temporary fix, and then retired to the dining room for a full-scale game of Phase 10 with all of us playing.

++++++++

Monday, September 3 - Labor Day

While Barbara and Leah were at the house having some Mother/Daughter time, Ryan, Kaiden, and I went out to Our Little Lot and spent the morning (Ryan and I can turn a 1-hour project into 3-4 hours) removing the original 800 pound (okay, maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but it felt like it) TV from the cabinet over the front dash and replacing it with a much lighter weight flat screen TV.

When that was done, we met the girls for lunch at the Red Dome in Quitman...

And then it was time to return to the house, get all the kids' stuff together and loaded in the car, and send them home to Fort Worth.

And then...nap time...no photos of that.

++++++++

Tuesday, September 4 - Thursday, September 6

We voted and decided that it was time to get serious about getting caught up with the journal/blog, so these days were focused on that project, even though we had other regular chores and activities to keep up with (getting car serviced, Wednesday evening activities at church, and symphonic band rehearsal Thursday night).   Other than that, our days were consumed with preparing photos and writing text for the journal.

++++++++

Friday, September 7

A really busy day today!  We would be keeping Aubrey and Rivers (children of some of our church friends) overnight, so in addition to making sure everything was ready for the girls, we had regular chores to do.  While I started the morning by frying up two pounds of hamburger meat to package and freeze for later use.  Then, I made up a large batch of spaghetti sauce to serve the girls tonight and also to save for the future.

Meanwhile, Barbara was busy dusting and straightening around the house...(though she did do the above mentioned items; the picture of Barbara's apron goes with our children's sermon for Sunday.

In between doing all those things, we also had to prepare our children's sermon for Sunday.

We don't know how we did it, but everything was ready by the time the girls arrived this afternoon after school.

The evening was all about fun and games...

++++++++

Saturday, September 8

The weather this morning was pretty yucky, so Taz rides were out of the question.  Instead, after a big breakfast of eggs and waffles, we loaded up in the car and drove to Yantis to spend some time at the first anniversary of Accents and Accessories, a shop owned by one of the ladies in our church.  It was an interesting experience, and Barbara even found a really nice denim vest to wear on our up-coming Taz trip...and the girls got hot dogs and something to drink.

When we got back to town, we took the girls to one of our favorite shops downtown, showed them the train station and caboose...

Took a look at the new Historic Mineola mural...

Went back to the house for a trumpet lesson for Aubrey...

And then headed back downtown to see a showing of "The Greatest Showman" (Rivers' all-time favorite movie)...

Our "babysitting" adventure was short, but sweet and fun!

++++++++

Sunday, September 9

Sunday morning means a stop at Whataburger for breakfast before driving to Yantis for Sunday school and church.  Today it meant a special surprise for Barbara when she found out that she had won a prize in the drawing at Accents and Accessories yesterday.  The prize was personally delivered to her at church this morning by Stephanie Roop, one of our church members and the owner of Accents and Accessories

The day continued to get better as we had a good children's sermon, great music, and a wonderful sermon from Pastor Craig.

As soon as the sermon was over, we received a call from our Kansas/Texas friends Gene and Michelle letting us know they were in East Texas for a short time and wondering if we wanted to meet them somewhere for lunch.  We decided on the Red Dome in Quitman and had a great time getting caught up on each other's lives.

++++++++

Monday, September 10

We decided a trip to Sulphur Springs was in order today, so we drove up to see our church friend Marilyn at the Rock Hill Rehab Center.

Marilyn has a number of photos and plaques hanging on her walls, and we found this one that really struck us as funny (and appropriate) today...

After saying goodbye to Marilyn, we drove downtown to the music store.  My trumpet suffered a near tragedy a couple of weeks ago and required some surgery.  This was the first time since Mother and Daddy gave me this trumpet in May before I entered high school in 1959 (59 years ago, if you're counting) that it needed repair work.

No trip to Sulphur Springs is complete without a stop at Panda Express for some take-out, so we figured we ought to make the trip complete...along with some extra egg rolls to chew on as we returned to Mineola.

++++++++

Tuesday, September 11

We've been planning a Taz trip for the last couple of weeks...didn't know for sure where we were going, but after checking the weather patterns, we voted to take a long-delayed ride to Montana, hoping to ride through some South Dakota, North Dakota, and Montana, states that Barbara hasn't been to.

I spent quite a bit of today washing Taz and the trailer (which was filthy from sitting out at the lake lot for over a year).  It took a lot of scrubbing, but it was worth it to see our everything clean and shiny again.

We also took some time to do some practice packing to figure out what we could...and couldn't take on the trip.

++++++++

Wednesday, September 12

We spent the morning preparing photos for the August Journal/Blog and finishing up a children't sermon for Sunday morning that we would later take to Yantis to give to Chad and Melaina to use in our absence Sunday morning.

This afternoon we took a long practice ride (since we needed to get our seats ready for a lot of time on Taz's seats).

When we got to Yantis we visited with Chad and Melaina to give them the sermon and discuss possible treats for the kids, said goodbyes to Mary Parker and Pastor Craig, and returned to the parking lot where we found our friends Gene and Michelle stopping to say goodbye as they headed back to Kansas.

It was a beautiful afternoon, so we just rode around the county for a couple of hours and then stopped at Dairy Queen in Quitman for malts.

Barbara got to drink her malt on the road, but most of mine pretty much stayed in the cup holder until we got back to the house.

When we got home, I backed Taz up to the garage and we went inside to finish our malts and do some more packing...lots to do before Saturday!!!

++++++++

Thursday, September 13

There was no time for photos today...it was all about taking care of the last minute "stuff" before a big trip.  There was some housecleaning, Barbara worked to finish the photos for the August blog, and I spent some kitchen time making salsa using some of my home-grown jalapenos and tomatoes that Gene and Michelle gave us, and we both took our turns doing laundry..

This afternoon we continued our packing, unpacking, repacking dance as we tried to whittle down to what was absolutely necessary for the Taz trip, what we'd like to take if there is room, and what just has to stay behind.

Tonight was my last rehearsal with the Lake Country Symphonic band for a few weeks.  But, the music and my pocket trumpet will definitely be making the trip with us.

++++++++

Friday, September 14

The last minute preparations continued throughout the day and then we finally decided we'd been inside too long.  The solution for that was to pack as much as we could into the trailer and take Taz on another practice ride to see how she would handle.

We voted that we were ready to roll right now, but there were things left undone at the house, so we returned to make our final preparations for shutting up the house for about three weeks.
