Taking Little Steps During May

May 1-May 31, 2013

May was a month of take one little step and go back 3. Edith quit talking much at all though she could still understand what we were saying. The best part of this month was one afternoon when I was telling Vanessa, Edith's friend and aide, that Edith had taught all of her boys to cook, sew, iron, clean house, etc. In fact, Jim was/is better at all of this than I am. Shocking us all, Edith quipped, "Well, what does he need you for?" The sweetest words we had heard!

Sometimes just enjoying the beauty of the yard with it's abundance of flowers and greenery, plus Jim's humor makes the day a brighter one. So, of course, when he pretended to eat Bonnie's food, I was there with my trusty camera.

Our church is getting a minor face lift inside the sanctuary which really opens up the front for the praise band to shine.

Meeting Michelle and Gene after church on Sunday for lunch is another natural highlight of our week-end.
Preparing for a dinner visit from Carolyn and Gene, keeps us vying for "best dessert" award. Unfortunately, Jim's trifle was more appealing than mine! And, of course, Jim & Gene had to display their plates, even though, now, Jim and I can't remember what we served.
Mother's Day week-end brought a visit from Leah and Ryan as well as pictures of Randi's prom night.

Finishing up Mother's Day week-end with church and dinner at Angela and Ladd's. Great time!

No matter how little Edith is able to talk and eat, having Leslie come fix her hair is a treat she enjoys!

In the middle of the month, we found ourselves going to Dallas since the young daughter of a former Wheelock student, was in the hospital. Tricia and daughter, Leah Renee' were co-conspirators in many activities when Leah stayed before and after school with Barbara (Tricia's mother). Therefore, it was important to me to go over there and I got the added bonus of getting to see Barbara, too.

And, of course, since we were in the "neighborhood" it seemed only right to stick around til school was out so we could meet up with Alexander, Abby, Heather, and Andy. To entertain ourselves while we waited, we ate out, shopped, and even took a short nap in the car until the kids came!

John, who is more like a grandfather to us than a neighbor, came over and saved our marriage today! Yes, he didn't know it; but, by coming over to help Jim put together a shed in the backyard, he made the day brighter for both of us! I was happy just to play photographer and water "girl."

The Lake Country Symphonic Band held their Spring concert on the 19th of May. TJ and some of her friends came to support Jim and other friends of theirs. And, to get myself in a pic, I used a store front window as a mirror! Desperate measures, my friends!
May the 20th was a difficult day for all of us. Jim, TJ, and I were scheduled to meet with Dottie, the Hospice nurse. Ernie got into town just in time to join us. The news wasn't surprising; but still difficult to hear. We are walking through the final days/weeks of Edith's life. Jim's dad's niece Janice and her daughter Tracy also came to see Edith.

Little April Ramblings

April, 2013

To Our Faithful Readers:

We are continuing to play catch-up with the reports of our retirement activities.  Because we are still several months behind, the journal/blog will be more in the style of Look Magazine...lots of pictures (because we have those in abundance) and as few words as possible to give some continuity to the story.

The first half of the month saw us taking care of business as usual...looking after Mother on a daily basis, and taking care of Mother's house in Mineola, Our Little Lot at Holiday Villages of Lake Fork, and the myriad other responsibilities of daily life.

We began the month with our own special celebration on the 2nd, our 19th wedding anniversary.  It wasn't a big celebration, but we did have lots of flowers, thanks to thousands of fresh Azalea blossoms on the bushes in front of Mother's house.

Activities the first week of the month included Barbara's visits to cardiac rehab in Quitman, my Monday night fishing on Lake Fork, and work on Our Little Lot, where we transplanted Crepe Myrtle plants that Addie, our next door neighbor in Mineola, gave us.

Sundays find us at Yantis First Baptist Church, where I have an opportunity to share the gift of music, and Barbara, her gift for photography.

With the birth of grandson Jack (Mike and Kelly's second child) on February 25, we started making plans for a trip to Virginia.  Our first concern was about Mother's health and care, but she assured us that she was well enough and had enough good care at the nursing home that we should go to Virginia without worrying about her.  So, we mapped everything out for a trip to Olathe to see Whitney, Jim, and Little Jimmy, and then a flight to Richmond (it is faster?).

After visiting with Mother on the 15th, we hopped in the car and started the trip to Olathe, stopping that night at the Best Western in Oklahoma, where we were surprised with an upgrade to the Presidential Suite.

The stay with Whitney and her family was short, but a lot of fun...meals at Greek and Italian restaurants that the kids like, early birthday celebrations for Whitney and Little Jimmy, and some rainy day fun for all.

The night before we were to leave Olathe, Mike flew in for a wedding; so after a hello, good-bye, and a photo, we all went to bed!
On the day we flew out of Kansas City, there was a huge storm that disrupted service and cancelled our flight.  We finally managed to get a Delta flight from MCI to Atlanta and then on to Richmond, where Kelly, Ava, and Jack met us at the airport.

The next few days were the stuff that grandparents dream of as we helped Kelly take care of the kids until Mike came back.

Saturday, April 20 was Whitney's birthday, so we took time out from our busy schedule with Ava and Jack to recognize her special day with this "then and now" collage.

And then it was back to playing grandparent.  It didn't take us long to get into the routine of the late night and early morning feedings for Jack, but it did require teamwork!

When Mike got back home, it didn't take long to determine that Daddy trumps Grams and Gramps.

One of the pleasures of visiting the kids in Virginia is that we also get to see some special friends.  One day while we were there, we worked in a lunch with Rod and Ruth Kunkel, friends that we first met on a church-building project in Florida several years ago, and Carrie and Norm Foote.  We were classmates with Carrie at Artesia High School many years ago.

After a fun time of visiting and eating (and we all enjoyed both of those activities), we said our goodbyes to friends and returned to our grandparent pleasures.

Our visit was over all too soon and then it was time for Mike and Ava to take us back to the airport for our return trip to Kansas and Texas. And, on a lark and a huge discount, we decided to upgrade to first class!

Jim met us at the airport in Kansas City and took us back to the house for a final bit of visiting with the kids there.

And then it was all over; however, we had packed a lot of living in just 14 days!  With that in mind, we loaded the car and began our journey back to Mineola, taking care of Mother, and handling life as we met it.

A Little March

March 1 – March 31, 2013
Since we are hopelessly behind on our journal, we've decided to do a whirlwind edition...Hang on to your hats...here we go! Started off the month taking a day trip to Lakehill Preparatory School where we went on Abby's field trip.  Happy 7th Birthday, Abby!

Ordinary weekly activities...plus an extra special Saturday when Carolyn and I had a girls' day out.

We're always blessed when we get to visit friends and family. This month was a treasure trove of that. First, we met one of our former students, Abi Robins, for lunch and a six year catch-up on life! Then we drove to Lindale one day to visit Heidi and tour her new job site. Finished up that week with a visit from Leah Renee'.

Working at the lake keeps Jim out of trouble, so he says. A March march concert ends the band season for the summer. New phones are either going to be a step in growing technologically or the death of us; the debate is still going on. Our last month to keep the nursery at church. We adore Jeremiah and have thoroughly enjoyed watching him grow!

Jim answered the call for a Bugler for a Coast Guard funeral in Lindale.  Then it was to the nursing home for his Mom to see him.
We ended the month as we began it...with family! Nothing finer! John sent us a picture of our great grandson Rhett, Kelly's Mom, Jan, sent us pictures of Ava and our new grandson Jack, and my sister Carol and her grandson, Tyler, were in the neighborhood so we met them in Lindale. And, last but not least, we celebrated Angela's birthday over at TJ's house to close out the month. Have I mentioned how blessed we are?

We close with a quote that fits our journal writing skills lately.
