A Little August Review

Friday, August 1 - Sunday, August 31, 2014

Friday, August 1

We started August with a little (no pun intended, but what the heck...if it works, use it) activity and photography (surprise, surprise).  John and Wanda, our neighbors across the street, sold a dining room set to cousins Ladd and Angela, and Ladd enlisted us to help move it from our neighborhood to his place.  Barbara was there to shoot the various stages of the move.

When the table and chairs were loaded onto the trailer, we followed Ladd to the house to do the procedure in reverse.

With everything moved in and set in place, Barbara and Ladd posed for this photo.

We never tire of the view from Ladd and Angela's porch...it's like being on a farm in the country, rather than being in the heart of the town.  Ladd recently took three of his worn-out saddles and set them on the fence so his horses could rub against them.

With the manual labor out of the way, we returned to our place to enjoy a leisurely afternoon and try to capture photos of the hummingbirds that hang around during the summer months.

Saturday, August 2

Because of scheduling conflicts with some of the members of the church praise band, we had a rare Saturday rehearsal today.  It was a beautiful day for a ride, so we took Taz instead of the car and made a stop at Our Little Lot at Holiday Villages so I could show Barbara the landscaping I had done earlier in the week.

We left Our Little Lot and drove north toward Yantis, crossing over Lake Fork on the Highway 154 bridge.

Barbara took some photos of the rehearsal and then scouted out the decorations for the upcoming Vacation Bible School.

The ride back to Mineola was everything we expected it to be on a beautiful afternoon.  As we got into town, we decided that a stop at Sonic was definitely in order to complete the day's activities.

++++++++

Sunday, August 3

We attended the regular morning service at Yantis First Baptist Church and then returned home for lunch and the traditional afternoon nap before returning to Yantis for the kick-off session for VBS.  It doesn't take much of an excuse to ride Taz instead of taking the car, so since it was such a nice afternoon, we saddled up and used our three-wheeled transportation for the evening.

Wonder of all wonders, our job for VBS this summer was to take photos.

Some of the kitchen crew...

Barbara took this shot of me with Reed Gammill.  I'm sure we were discussing something very serious.

Dr. Kent Pate, our interim pastor, got his first "sit" on Taz as we were getting ready to leave.

We crossed Lake Fork on the way back home...it's always an interesting place for photographs.

++++++++

Monday, August 4

Our evenings this week were full of VBS activities at Yantis, but normal life (whatever "normal" might be, continued.

Monday seems to have become our regular housecleaning day.  Sometimes its a deep cleaning and sometimes its a "lick and a promise" activity, but it does make us feel better to start out the week with a clean and presentable house.  Today was a deep-cleaning day, with no time for photos of anything.

We were also very concerned about John and Wanda, our across-the-street neighbors. John has been diagnosed with a tumor on his liver and today he and Wanda went to an oncologist in Tyler for more specifics and information about how to proceed from here.  We did find out later in the day that the tumor is about the size of a man's fist and is malignant. Now John and Wanda are in a holding pattern until the medical community can figure out what, if anything, can be done.

We made up for the lack of photos during the day by taking around 250 photos during the evening's VBS activities at Yantis.

At the end of each day, we returned home to cull through all the photographs, make collages, and post everything to the church Facebook page.  We found that a lot of the kids (and some adults) must have gone home and logged onto Facebook to look at the photos as soon as they were posted.

++++++++

Tuesday, August 5

I went to church early this morning for prayer meeting and then to Our Little Lot for some serious yard work.  The grass in the yard is growing faster than I can keep up with, and the weeds and vines are taking over the gully, so there is never a shortage of work to be done.

This is a "before and after" collage of what I accomplished this morning...it was some very slow going!

Meanwhile, back at the house, Barbara spent the morning in the kitchen building new recipes.  The recipe for today was Banana/Apple/Cranberry/Oat Bread, and it is definitely a keeper!!!  Not only is it delicious, it fits very well with the diet that we are on...can't go wrong with something like that!

This evening we returned to Yantis to photograph more VBS activities.

Food!!!

Arts and Crafts!!!

 Classes!!!

Recreation!!!

Among the props for this week's activities are some oversized cameras.  We decided to have a little photo phun with them.

And then we ended the evening's activities with this shot of sunset over Yantis, taken at the western edge of the church property.

Wednesday, August 6

With a little over 10,000 miles on the odometer, it was time to take Taz to Broadway Power Sports in Tyler for routine service and a recall procedure.  I rode Taz and Barbara followed me to Tyler.  We were thinking of stopping at Sam's Club for some shopping, but decided that we'd rather just come back home and have lunch.

Wednesday is the day that the lawn crews come to our neighborhood.  We still do our own work unless we are out of town, so I went out this afternoon to fire up the lawnmower.  It wouldn't fire, so I went through all the procedures to eliminate what might be the problem. In the course of those activities, I cleaned the air filter, changed the oil (first time in three years), lubricated all the cables that had anything to do with the fuel feed, and pulled and cleaned the spark plug...nothing worked.  So, I finally went to Sears, bought a new spark plug and returned home to install it.  Sure enough, that was the problem...the mower fired right up on the first pull, belched a little smoke, and ran just as if it was new.  The only problem was that by then it was too late to do the mowing and still get ready for VBS, so I left the mower in the garage, ready to use tomorrow.

This evening we returned to Yantis to document another session of VBS.

Even the neighborhood dogs wanted to participate in VBS.

++++++++

Thursday, August 7

The weather cooperated this morning, so while Barbara worked on new recipes in the kitchen, I fired up the lawnmower and got the front and back yards mowed and trimmed.

Our friends Gene and Carolyn Neyer came into town to pick us up and we drove up to Quitman to eat lunch at the Lake Fork Creek Restaurant, a new experience for all of us. The restaurant had lots of "atmosphere," the food was delicious, and the fellowship we shared with Gene and Carolyn was just what we needed after this very busy week.

After eating and visiting, we returned home for an afternoon nap and then went back to Yantis for more VBS.

++++++++

Friday, August 8

We were a little slow getting around this morning, but when we finally got in gear, we drove to Tyler to do some shopping at Dollar Tree, went to Red Lobster to treat ourselves to lunch, and then went to Broadway Power Sports to bail out Taz.

We didn't accomplish much of anything this afternoon, but around 5:00, we drove up to Yantis in the car (it was w-a-y to hot to be out on Taz) for the final night of VBS.

At the end of the evening, I gave Jeremy Durig, our youth pastor, 16 CD's loaded with more than 1,100 photos that we had taken during the week.  And, we promised him there would be more when we saw him on Sunday.

++++++++

Saturday, August 9

Cousin Rob and his family have been here for a couple of days visiting Aunt TJ.  Because of all our activities, we haven't had a chance to see them, but we were able to go over this morning for a bit before they returned to Shamrock.

Happy 91st Birthday celebration to our dear neighbor Addie Provow!!!  Addie recently sold her home next door to us and moved to the Autumn Wind assisted living center just across the North 40.  Addie's "adopted" daughter, Linda McGuire, has been here for a couple of weeks for a visit and today we all had an early birthday celebration at Autumn Wind.

As our present to Addie, we asked our friend Heidi Hays to bake a couple of birthday cakes.  Heidi and Curt came over to deliver the cakes after lunch and we got to have a nice visit with them.  We're still amazed that we first met Heidi at the Georgia Baptist Conference Center in Toccoa, Georgia, and now they live in Lindale, just 15 miles away from us.

After Curt and Heidi left, we drove over to Autumn Wind to deliver the cakes and help everyone celebrate Addie's birthday.

Also attending the party was our good friend Jenny Bunn and her son, Gary.

Today also marked a very important date for us...the first anniversary of our purchase of Taz!!!

Following are collages showing our various travels over 10,605 miles through 16 states:

First, a special birthday present...a wash and wax for a showroom finish.

And then...days and miles on the road...

++++++++

Sunday, August 10

We attended the morning service today at Yantis First Baptist Church.  Jeremy, our youth pastor, recognized all the VBS workers and than asked Barbara and me to come forward to receive a special gift...a pair of the over sized prop cameras that had been used during VBS. Unfortunately, there was no one to take a photo of the occasion, but we do have the cameras on prominent display in the house.

++++++++

Monday, August 11

After all the activities of last week, we were more than happy to welcome a slow Monday. With nothing earthshaking to accomplish, we made do with some basic housecleaning and laundry chores, and enjoyed a day of doing nothing serious.

++++++++

Tuesday, August 12

This was a prayer meeting day at Yantis First Baptist Church.  I crossed the 154 bridge over Lake Fork just as the sun was rising and stopped long to get these shots.

Instead of going to Our Little Lot for the usual session of mowing, trimming, and brush clearing, I returned to Mineola right after prayer meeting so we could have a part in celebrating John Garrett's birthday across the street.

I grabbed my trumpet and Barbara grabbed a sign and presents and we stationed ourselves outside John and Wanda's front door, with me just around the corner and out of sight.  To say that John and Wanda were surprised would be an understatement!

When we were inside the house, I serenaded John and Wanda with another round of Happy Birthday and one of John's favorite hymns, and Barbara handed out the gifts.

I decided that since I was in town instead of at the lake property this morning, I might as well get started on our yard work.  I got the trimming done in the front yard and then Barbara started mowing while I cleared flower beds.

We had a shrub bush along the south side of the house, but it was stunted and drying up, so I decided to find out just how difficult it would be to remove it completely.  Fortunately, it wasn't as difficult as I thought it might be.  Instead of having deep roots, it had about a kazillion tiny roots that were intertwined a few inches below the surface.

The rest of the afternoon was spent cleaning up the mess along the south side of the house and mowing and trimming the back yard.

++++++++

Wednesday, August 13

While Barbara stayed at the house this morning to try out some new recipes, I went out to Our Little Lot to do the Tuesday work on Wednesday.  By the time I finished (ran out of steam), I was beginning to doubt my sanity in deciding to get the gully cleaned out during August!  I made progress in clearing the brush, but there is so much left to do.

By the time I got back to the house, I had just enough energy left to take a couple of photos of the front of the house before going inside for some lunch and then collapsing.

While I was at the lake lot, Barbara defrosted the freezer in the garage, cooked up a crock pot full of chicken breasts and shredded and bagged them, and cooked up a mess of pork chops and fresh black-eyed peas.  Boy...did we eat good today!!

With a good meal under our belts and a nice little nap, we were refreshed enough to take Taz out for a spin around town this evening...just in time to catch this shot of the sunset as we turned off the loop and headed west on Highway 80.

++++++++

Thursday, August 14

We got up early this morning and went to Yantis to help with the annual back-to-school teacher appreciation breakfast hosted by YFBC..

When we were through at church, we drove to Sulphur Springs to get our Walmart fix.  We planned to go from Walmart to Panda Express for lunch, but PE was late opening for lunch, so we just went back to Mineola and fixed our own lunch.

++++++++

Friday, August 15

Before our friend Elmer Bunn passed away in June, I had agreed to sound Taps at his funeral.  Unfortunately, we were on a road trip in New Mexico when Elmer died and the family insisted that we not interrupt our trip to return.  When we did get back, we  visited with Jenny and decided that when Elmer's headstone was placed, we'd all go to the cemetery and have a private memorial service.  Then, when we told Addie what we were doing (Addie and Jenny are both residents at Autumn Wind Assisted Living Center), she asked if we could do the same thing for her husband, Ernie, who is buried close to Elmer.  We worked out schedules for everyone and arranged to meet at the cemetery today to honor two of America's heroes who served during World War II.  Elmer was in the Navy, and Ernie was in the Army Air Force and was an aircraft crew chief on flights over Normandy in D-Day.

Barbara and I went to the cemetery early to get everything set up, and then Linda McGuire brought the ladies out at 10:30 for the memorials.

We had planned that we would all go to lunch following the ceremonies, but Addie had to return to Autumn Wind to oversee the installation of a Dish system, so we took Jenny and her sister to the El Rancho Restaurant (Aunt TJ joined us there), to have a nice lunch and visit.

We learned yesterday that Jaycie was on the way to a volleyball tournament in Denton, so when we finished our meal today, we pointed the car in that direction and headed off for another adventure.

It was great to get to visit with her for awhile before the team left the gymnasium to go back to their hotel, and we joined the Dallas area traffic to return to Mineola.

++++++++

Saturday, August 16

I started the day early by driving to Yantis for the monthly men's breakfast at the church. Some of the regular kitchen crew members were unable to attend today, so I filled in by frying hash browns.  Our attendance was down a bit this morning, but those who attended had a great time.

Following the breakfast and clean-up, we had a workday on the church grounds, cleaning up the mess made when we had to take down some trees that had been damaged during a recent storm.

Meanwhile, back at the house, Barbara was busy working on the menu for a special meal for Addie and Linda to make up for the one they missed on Friday.  TJ joined us for the event as we visited and showed the ladies a DVD of our Taz Trip from Mineola to San Francisco.

++++++++

Sunday, August 17

I went out to the lake lot this morning to do some mowing and trimming, something that had been neglected earlier in the week while I was cleaning out the brush and weeds in the gully.  I took some before and after photos of different areas of the lot, not that anyone will be able to tell much difference, since the lot wasn't in terrible shape to begin with.

While I was playing outside, Barbara was at the house doing laundry, gettting caught up on the bills, and preparing the house for a visit with Heather, Andy, Alexander, and Abby.

Heather and Andy will begin their school in-service activities this week and asked us if we would watch the kids for them, and of course, we agreed to do that.

The kids spent Saturday night camping at Lake Tyler State Park and then got to us around 2:00.  We had a short visit and then Heather and Andy got on down the road to Richardson. Alexander and Abby were exhausted from their camping trip, and took a short nap before we began any activities.

When we finally did get everyone moving, we found that we needed to make a Walmart run for a few things.  We told the kids to go outside and we'd be with them in just a minute. Then, Barbara and I decided that she'd take the car and I would take Taz, and each of the kids would get a Taz ride, either to or from the store.  When we stepped outside to the garage, we found both kids already on Taz...guess they were thinking along the same lines.

The kids made the decision that Alexander would ride with me to Walmart, and Abby would ride Taz back home.

For dinner tonight, we had stacked enchiladas, something new for the kids.  We told them that it was a team effort, explained how each of them would build their own stack, and then guided them through the process.  They learned quickly, and soon we were enjoying delicious stacks of enchiladas, topped with fried eggs...Yum-yum!!!

++++++++

Monday, August 18

There was no down time at our place today.  After breakfast, we began the day's activities by going across the street with a birthday surprise for Wanda, whose birthday almost always coincides with the kids' last visit of the summer.  We rang the door bell and waited, but then figured John and Wanda must have gone to the store.  As we were leaving to go back across the street, we saw John and Wanda turning onto Heritage Drive, so we quickly took our places.  I played Happy Birthday on the trumpet and everyone sang to Wanda.  Then, we gave her our gifts and a birthday sign for the yard before leaving to go back to the house.

Barbara had made up a bunch of special treats yesterday to deliver to some special friends. We took both the car and Taz so the kids could get some cycle time.  Our first stop was at Autumn Wind to see Jenny Bunn and then Addie Provow, our former next-door neighbor.

When we left Autumn Wind, we drove/rode over to TJ's house to share some of the bounty and have a short visit.

Abby decided that she needed to take photos of Copper and Patty, TJ's dogs.

Grams thought that lunch out would be a good idea, so we stopped at Wingdinger's on the way back to the house.  Grams and Gramps split a build-it-yourself burger, while Alexander and Abby ordered pizza.

When she wasn't eating, Abby was busy taking pictures around the patio deck.

Before leaving, the kids ordered up some ice cream to take home and enjoy while we took a little break.

After a short rest, we all got into the car and drove over to Ladd and Angela's house so the kids could see the chickens.  Not only did they get to see them, they got up close and personal by gathering eggs.

We then drove out to the Mineola Nature Preserve that runs along the Sabine River.  The kids had a blast checking out the static displays and walking down to the pond.

In past visits with the kids, we've spent the evenings watching movies that they enjoy. Tonight we broke that pattern and taught them to play Rummi-Kube, a form of Gin Rummy played with dominoes.  The kids caught on quickly, even taking time to console Gramps when he was having a particularly bad hand.

++++++++

Tuesday, August 19

While Barbara and the kids enjoyed sleeping in this morning, I drove out to Yantis for prayer meeting.  When I was finished there, I drove back to town to have some breakfast.  Then, we all drove over to Autumn Wind to pick up Linda McGuire and take her to the airport in Tyler.

When Linda and her lugguage were safely at the terminal, we drove across town to Faulkner Park for some fun in the sun and water, and a picnic lunch.

We then drove back to Mineola, rested and watched a movie, and then had some Taz time. Last year, the kids were pretty much satisfied with a spin around the block or a ride to the civic center and back.  Those days are over...our rides this summer are full-scale and full speed.

When the rides were completed, Abby and Alexander got the camera and had some Photo Phun before we had dinner and enjoyed another round of Rummi-Kube.

++++++++

Wednesday, August 20

Our agenda today took us first to Grand Saline and a traditional visit to the Salt Palace.

And then to Splash Kingdom in Canton for several hours of water fun.  We took lots and lots of pictures, but since they all looked pretty much the same, we narrowed the selections to this collage.

Everyone was worn out by the time we got back to Mineola.  We ordered a set of photos from Walmart for Abby and had our evening Taz rides before settling down for a quiet evening while the kids began packing for their trip back home tomorrow.

++++++++

Thursday, August 21

Today was the day to return Alexander and Abby to Richardson.  It was also the day for our neighbor, John, to have surgery to remove a malignant growth from his liver.  Since we didn't need to take the kids until this afternoon, TJ kept them while we drove to Tyler to sit with Wanda and her family during the surgery,  The procedures went well for John and as soon as the doctor came out to let everyone know how it went, we went downstairs for lunch in the hospital cafeteria and then drove back to Mineola to pick up the kids.

We weren't in a big hurry to get to Richardson, so we took our time and enjoyed the sights along the way and then spent some time shopping at the Firewheel Mall in Murphy until Andy arrived to take charge of the kids and all their stuff.

We then did a turn-around and drove back to Mineola, pretty much totally exhausted after a long and emotional day.

++++++++

Friday, August 22

We had considered driving to Burleson this morning to be with Leah for her doctor appointment, but we were still very tired when we woke up, so we decided to not go.  It was just as well, since Leah went early to the doctor and got to see him 30 minutes ahead of schedule, and was then through in just a few minutes.  Even if we had gone on time, we would have completely missed her.

Once we finally got waked up and moving around, we had breakfast and then I tackled the chore of detailing the inside of the car while Barbara paid bills, worked on photo folders for the journal/blog, and began preparing meals for the day.

++++++++

Saturday, August 23

For the last year, I've been considering digging up a dead, but covered in ivy, shrub in the back yard.  After taking out the one in front a week or so ago, I decided that this would be a doable thing, even though it would be much more labor intensive than the other one.  Also, Barbara wanted to move the concrete bench to the front yard, and the only way I could do that would be to dig out a bunch of the ivy that surrounded it.

So, I put on my working clothes and began the job of pulling out as much of the ivy as I could before moving the bench and ultimately cutting out the shrubbery.  And I was right...it was a long and dirty job, but the final results were better than we expected.

Here is the project in photos:

Before, during, and after photos of the area in the back yard...

Sometimes you have to make a mess to clean up a mess...

Moving and setting the 5-section concrete bench...

The finished project in the front yard...

And the finished project in the back yard...

And then it was time to put the tools away, take a shower, and crash for the rest of the day!!!

++++++++

Sunday, August 24

Today was a full day of activities at Yantis First Baptist Church, along with celebrating a day of rest...no yard work...no housecleaning!

++++++++

Monday, August 25

Since we had some travel and activities on tap for tomorrow, we moved some of the Tuesday work to today.  Tops on the list was to go out to Our Little Lot to do some serious tree trimming and torch the burn pile to make room for more.  As you can see, we managed to fill the trailer with all the limbs and branches we cut.

We stayed at the lot until it was too hot and we were too tired to do anymore, and then returned to Mineola to do as little as possible for the afternoon.

++++++++

Tuesday, August 26

Barbara spent the morning working in the house while I went outside to do the weekly mowing and trimming of the front and back yards.

At 1:30, we made our way to see Leslie at Naturally Nails to get haircuts...it was that or go to the vet and get outfitted with dog tags.

After losing a few pounds of hair, we drove to Tyler to look for a new trailer so we can haul Taz behind Big V.  Unfortunately, our current trailer is 1 1/2 inches too narrow, and there is no way to modify it.  We found exactly what we need at Coker Industries in Tyler, but now we have to sell the one we have...time to get reacquainted with Craigs List.

When we were finished with our running around, we went to Trinity Mother Francis Hospital to visit with John and see how he was doing.  The surgery definitely slowed him down and he was still in a lot of pain, but his spirits were good, and they were talking about releasing him by the end of the week...not bad for a man who, six weeks ago, was diagnosed with a cancerous situation that no one seemed to know what to do about.  There is no doubt in our minds that prayers played a huge part in pulling all the right people together to bring John to this point!

++++++++

Wednesday, August 27

We had a really fun day in the kitchen today.  I spent my time baking banana-nut bread, and Barbara spent her time working on a new zucchini bread recipe.  We made a mess of the kitchen, but had a great time doing it...and the finished products made it all worthwhile.

This afternoon we got out and delivered samples of our work to neighbors Wanda and Dorothy, to Jenny and Addie at Autumn Wind, and to Aunt TJ...all were very appreciative.

While I drove out to Yantis for praise band rehearsal this evening, Barbara stayed home and worked on more photo files for the journal/blog.

++++++++

Thursday, August 28

Today was another kitchen day.  Barbara tried out some new breakfast recipes, I fried and bagged 4 pounds of hamburger (Little-known fact: a 4-pound package of 90/10 ground beef from Walmart produces only 2 1/2 pounds of meat after frying...you pay for a lot of water, grease, and styrofoam packaging along with the meat).  I also baked a couple of loaves of jalapeno bread before we got the kitchen cleaned up and ready for a visit from the plumber. Our disposal unit finally bit the dust and there was nothing else to do but have it replaced.

Tonight was the first rehearsal of the season for the Lake Country Symphonic Band.  Since one of our members is now a band director at Quitman, we've moved our rehearsals from the Church of Christ in Mineola to the band room at Quitman High School.  It means a few more minutes of driving time, but sure does give us easy access to instruments, stands, etc.

++++++++

Friday, August 29

Some days are just days and that's all you can say about them.  Today was one of those days...absolutely nothing memorable of worth discussing occurred.

++++++++

Saturday, August 30

Part of the morning was spent in the kitchen by both of us.  Cousin Ladd's mother and brother are in town for a few days and we'll be having a big family dinner at their place tomorrow evening.  For our part, I put on a big pot of pinto beans and ham hock to simmer all day and baked a couple of loaves of jalapeno bread.  Barbara, meanwhile, put together a large pan of pecan bars.

One of our former students from Liberal, Sergio Padilla, III was getting married today in Liberal.  We had thought we might be able to go up for the weekend and be part of the big event, but it just didn't work out.  Instead, Barbara got the blow-by-blow description of the days events (including photos) from our friend Charlene Plett, the librarian (excuse me, the media specialist) who worked with Barbara at West Middle School and then came to the high school the year we retired.

While Barbara was keeping up with the wedding, I went outside and transplanted iris bulbs in the back yard beds that I had cleaned out last Saturday.  It was pretty nasty work, but at the end, it looked very good.  Now we have to pray for rain at the right time and hope the plants all take root and grow.

To top off the day's activities, I cleaned out the little storage shed in the back yard, re-installed some shelving that had come apart when the shed was blown over during a bad wind storm a couple of months ago, and got all the yard and garden tools put back where they belonged.  All in all, it was a very good day for both of us.

++++++++

Sunday, August 31

Barbara started having a bout of severe intestinal disturbance about 1:30 am.  She didn't get any sleep after that, so she voted herself out of going to church this morning.  Since I was doing a trumpet solo for the special music, I drove on out to Yantis for the morning service and then came back to Mineola as soon as it was over.

For Barbara, the afternoon was a continuation of the morning bout, so she spent as much time in bed as she could.

I took our food over to Ladd and Angela and joined the group for supper (and photos).  We had a great time of visiting, and there was certainly no shortage of good food!

I left the party a little early to go back to the house to check on Barbara.  We realized right after I go home that I had left the lid to the crock pot and some hot pads at Ladd and Angela's house, so Barbara ventured out with me for a few minutes to get our things back and meet Ladd's family.  Then, it was back to the house to rest and hope for the best as far as Barbara's illness was concerned.

We were blessed over the past couple of days to receive several back-to-school pictures from the kids and thought sharing them would be a great way to close out this month's journal/blog.
