More Than a Little Travel

Tuesday, October 1 - Thursday, October 31

Tuesday, October 1

Happy Birthday to Granddaughter Jaycie who turns 16 today.

This month would find us putting in more than a few miles. In fact, by October 31st we found that we lacked 24.3 miles of being able to go to Midlothian, VA and back. Yep, our total mileage for this month would be 2403.7 miles and when we go to visit Mike and Kelly and the kids, our round trip chalks up 2428 miles. With that said, let me get busy talking about this month.

Two things occurred this month that made Jim and me reflect on how time has flown. First, Jacob Riggs, one of our former Odyssey of the Mind students became a dad when his son Noah was born. Then, Sergio was graduating from basic training in San Antonio. With these two events in mind, I made the following collage of photos then and now.

Thursday, October 3-Saturday, October 5

Buckle your seat belts for trip one. San Antonio bound to visit John and family as well as attend the ceremonies surrounding Sergio's completion of basic training. An added surprise was the opportunity to have lunch with Bob Brown, a former high school classmate of ours

An India Oven Lunch with Bob Brown... Jim and I hadn't seen Bob since high school graduation 51 years ago, so we shared very condensed versions of our lives since then.

Bob was one of the few 1962 AHS graduates that Jim attended school with from the first through the 12th grades. Thanks, Bob, for a new experience and a wonderful meal!

Sunday, October 6

On the trip back to Mineola, we stopped for a breakfast visit in New Braunsfel at On the River with Barbara Pirch and her friend Jim. It was a great visit, wonderful food, and gorgeous setting.

Monday, October 7- Wednesday, October 10

No time to sleep in today. We had contracted with Miracle Method to have our kitchen cabinets redone. Having no idea what this really entailed, Jim made certain that he had the camera ready to document the event.

The smell, noise, and work was rather overpowering. Thank goodness we have lots of windows! However, the finished product was worth every minute and penny.

Wednesday, October 9-Thursday, October 10

Rev up your engines, we're on the way to Rockwall to meet Heather and pick up Alexander and Abby since their parents have a workday tomorrow and the kids are out of school.  On Thursday afternoon, we will return them at Lakehill Preparatory School where Heather will be finishing up her day.

Watching movies, riding on Taz, playing soccer, and stops at the Salt Museum in Grand Saline as well as the Russell Stover Outlet Store in Terrell, there was never a dull moment and time flew by!

October 10...Happy birthday to my sister, Carol, in Roswell, NM.
Since this was the last Thursday band practice before Jim's concert, we had no time to really visit with Heather and Andy. It was basically a "Here's your kids, the luggage, and thank you for allowing us to enjoy their company!" type of stop.

October 13...Swing Into Fall Lake Country Symphonic Band Concert...

The band performed a full concert of Big Band and jazz ensemble music...and Jim even had a couple of trumpet solos along the way.

October 13...Sharing Time With Gene and Michelle
October 15...Time to hit the road once again as we journey to San Angelo to watch Jaycie and her MHS volleyball team play. Sometimes just a few hours can make some great memories!

October 16

We hit the highway early with Artesia, NM in our sights. Not only are we visiting our second family, the Terpenings; but we're also going to see the placement of Edith's headstone. Since everyone was working when we arrived, we headed to Twin Oaks Memorial Park first.

October 16...What One Might Call, "Home Sweet Home"

Recap of Visits With Jaycie (San Angelo), Jerry, Nancy, Becky (Artesia) and with Susie, Barbara, Henry & Miriam (Roswell, NM)

Jim and I had to keep our Friday, October 18, visit to Roswell to see Susie, Barbara, and the kids a secret as my nieces and nephew were throwing my sister Carol a surprise 71st birthday party on Saturday, the 19th, and she couldn't know we were in town.

October 19-20

While we were waiting on Carol to arrive at her party, Jim went over to his brother's home and visited with Jerry and Jane.
To say Carol has a big family would be putting it mildly, especially since her daughter Connie wasn't able to come. And, there were several grandkids, another sister, etc. missing. In fact, Carol is holding the phone up to show that she is talking with her granddaughter Tonya. It was a fun day!

Leaving the party still swinging, Jim and I headed for our next destination, Lubbock, TX, where we had a dinner date at 5 with Jaycie and her boyfriend, Keaton. It would be our first time to meet him; so we were pretty excited!

Once back at Jaycie's home, we found that her great grandmother Charlotte, who I taught with in the 70's at Martin Elementary School, and her grandmother Susan were visiting. It just seemed that a 4 generation photo was necessary. Stacy's boys were also there so the camera got a definite workout.

Again, a fun time was had!

No trip to Lubbock is considered complete without a visit with our dear friend, Becky!
Had to try out this view with the camera. Our hotel elevator had a glass ceiling. Too cool!

Monday, October 21

Singing the song, "Lubbock in my rear view mirror," we pointed the car to the east and moseyed back to Mineola, TX.

Thursday, October 24....He, She, and Taz

Sunday, October 24...Yantis 1st Baptist Church Fish Fry and Fall Festival

Nothing like us, just being us!

Tuesday, October 29...Since we were taking Leah to Huguley Hospital on the 30th for a surgical procedure, we decided to check out the Jellystone campground in Burleson that we had heard so much about. It is definitely a place we'd like to take the grandkids of all ages!

Ryan's razor is obviously broken, but Leah found one of hers. Just in the nick of time, Ryan convinced her that that was a bad idea.
